RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark - Episode 1

RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark travels with renowned National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore as he photographs at-risk and rare species in the wild, in zoos, in nature preserves. Joel's Photo Ark initiative serves as an important record of each animals’ existence and a powerful testament to the importance of saving them. In Spain, Joel Sartore meets the people who have brought the Iberian lynx population back from near extinction in 2002 to numbering more than 500 today. But scientists working in China might be too late for the Yangtze softshell turtle. Joel witnesses an attempt to artificially inseminate the last known female on the planet to save the species. He’s also arranged to capture the South China tiger, perhaps his only chance to shoot the world’s rarest tiger subspecies. He goes to great lengths to make this picture happen, even locking himself into an enclosure without an escape hatch.
